Does a Rainy Climate Spell Mold in My Building in the Future?

The rainy oceanic climate of the Lower Mainland does not guarantee that your building will eventually have a mold problem, but it definitely puts a building at risk. In today’s blog article, we are going to talk about how to mitigate that risk.

The biggest issue regarding mold in a rainy climate is not whether a building exterior or interior gets wet but whether it stays wet. So, here, below are ways to mitigate the risk of mold.

Building Envelope

The first order of business is determining if water is getting into the building. Anywhere that there are signs of this need to be promptly addressed and repaired. Roofs, gutters, doors and windows, and drainage around a building should be regularly inspected and be in good working order.

If you are not sure if water is getting into the building, then you may need to hire professionals to find out. Stopping water from entering the building is the first step.

Ventilation

The next issue is one of ventilation. Water coming into a building is only one problem. The correct amount of constant ventilation or air moving inside and outside a building is critical for keeping buildings with a healthy air environment and also cutting down on humidity which feeds mold.

Heat

Heat can help to control humidity, dry out anything already wet, and limit mold. Mold typically needs a cool temperature to grow, so heat is its enemy. An efficient heating system will go a long way to protecting your building from mold.

Humidity

Sometimes despite best efforts, you may need added dehumidifiers to keep a building with a lower level of humidity. This is just another piece of the puzzle to limiting risk of mold.

If you have concerns about whether your building is has a current or future mold problem, talk to experts on the subject who can either put your mind at ease or help you to make some improvements so that you are not facing a costly repair in the future.
