Shrink wrap is ideal for use in hazardous materials remediation projects. In fact, shrink wrap is one of the best negative pressure containment systems for the safe abatement or removal of hazardous materials.

What Is Hazardous Material Remediation?

Hazardous material remediation and or abatement frequently involves the removal of various hazardous materials like asbestos, typically from pre-1990 buildings during renovation or demolition.

Often, in older buildings these hazardous materials are harmless if they are not disturbed, but once they are disturbed, toxic substances can become airborne and very dangerous for those who come in contact with or inhale them. For that reason and for everyone’s safety, toxic substances need to be identified and removed before construction or renovation can take place. Building surveys are also required in pre-1990 buildings and facility and if identified, a risk-assessment must be completed by trained professionals and a management or abatement plan must be put in place.

What Kinds of Toxic Substances?

The best known example is asbestos, which was used in over 3,000 building products and can be most commonly found in floor coverings, cement sheet boards and tiles, drywall, plaster, stucco, vermiculite, roofing, acoustic and fire insulation, fabrics, and even paint and coatings. But there are plenty of other hazardous materials besides asbestos. Many buildings may also contain lead paint and coatings, mercury, and PCBs or polychlorinated biphenyls.

How Does Shrink Wrap Help?

The beauty of shrink wrap is that it is used to create a containment for abatement or removal of the hazardous materials. Creating a negative pressure environment further reduces the risk of hazardous materials migrating to other areas during abatement or remediation.

Shrink wrap is wind resistant and also keeps the rain and snow out, and can help to keep heat in, during winter months if those doing the remediation are working on an outside project. In addition, shrink wrap is a very cost-effective containment material. Enviro-Vac shrink wrap is well known for its high bonding characteristics and drum tight fit around objects, consistent quality and is made from only the highest quality raw materials.
